Wayne Westner

Few players combined power and flair quite like Wayne Westner. Turning professional in the early 1980s, he quickly became a force on the Sunshine Tour, winning multiple titles including two South African Opens and the South African Masters, and topping the local Order of Merit in the mid-1990s. His aggressive style and ability to score low made him a crowd favourite.

Internationally, Westner’s finest hour came at the 1996 World Cup of Golf, where he partnered Ernie Els to a runaway victory for South Africa, winning the team event by a remarkable 18 shots.

For many South African fans, Westner represented a golden era of home-grown talent able to take on – and beat – the world.

Remembered both for his wins and his charismatic presence, he remains an important part of the heritage the Sunshine Legends Tour celebrates.
