Wallie Coetsee

Wallie represents the modern senior professional: a player who has seen every side of tour life, stuck with it through the lean years, and is now enjoying a richly deserved renaissance on the over-50s stage.

Raised in Tzaneen and encouraged into the game by his father, a tomato farmer, Wallie Coetsee is one of those classic Sunshine Tour professionals whose career has been built on perseverance as much as talent. Turning professional in 1992, he spent several years grinding on tour before his breakthrough win at the 1997 FNB Namibia Open, followed by a second Sunshine Tour victory at the 2014 Mopani Copper Mines Zambia Open – achievements that bookend more than three decades in the professional game.

Coetsee came to wider international attention at the 2015 Joburg Open, where he led for much of the week and took a two-shot advantage into the final round of the European Tour event, proving he could set the pace against world-class opposition.

In recent years he has become a force on the Sunshine Legends/Senior Tour, winning the 2023 SA Senior Open and contending regularly, including a runner-up finish at the 2025 PGA Senior Championship before heading to the Mangais Senior Classic in Angola.

Now based in Jeffreys Bay, Coetsee brings a relaxed, down-to-earth personality to the fairways, but underneath it lies a fiercely competitive streak and a deep connection to South African golf.

For the Sunshine Legends Tour, he represents the modern senior professional: a player who has seen every side of tour life, stuck with it through the lean years, and is now enjoying a richly deserved renaissance on the over-50s stage.
