Biography
Port Elizabeth–born Roger Wessels is one of South Africa’s most respected all-round golf professionals – a proven tour winner who has gone on to become a highly regarded coach and mentor.
Turning professional relatively late, at 26, without a decorated amateur career, he carved out his own path on the Southern Africa circuit and quickly made up for lost time, winning several times on what became the Sunshine Tour, including the South African PGA Championship in 1991.
His success extended abroad with victory at the Canadian Masters in 1994 and a place on the South African World Cup team that same year, before he earned full status on the European Tour, where his best season in 2000 saw him finish 35th on the Order of Merit.
After stepping back from full-time competitive golf in the mid-2000s, Wessels reinvented himself as a coach, settling in George and becoming Head of Golf/Director of Golf at academies such as KeNako and Bramble Hill, where he works with elite juniors and emerging professionals under the GolfRSA pathway.
His coaching blends deep tour experience with a thoughtful, analytical approach, and many of his students have gone on to national teams and international tours. For the Sunshine Legends Tour, Wessels represents the full arc of a golf life – from mini-tour grinder and international winner to the mentor now shaping the next generation of Southern African champions.
