Biography
Known affectionately as “The Germiston Giant”, Phil Simmons was both a strong tournament professional and one of South Africa’s most respected club professionals.
He finished runner-up in the 1985 South African Open and competed regularly on the Southern African/Sunshine Tour era fields, earning a reputation as a tough competitor and fine ball-striker.
Beyond tour golf, Simmons devoted much of his life to the game at club and community level.
A long-time PGA of South Africa member and Master Professional, he served as Golf Director and later GM at Gowrie Farm Golf Estate, helping shape one of the country’s most distinctive golf destinations and mentoring countless players and young pros.
His passing in 2025 was widely mourned in South African golf circles, but his influence lives on in the golfers, clubs and communities he helped build – a reminder that “legends” are not only defined by trophies, but by the impact they leave behind.
